PROMPT

Friday Night in San Francisco is a 1981 live album played by legendary guitarists Al Di Meoloa, John McLaughlin, and Paco DeLuca. The original Nuevo-flamenco album cover was designed by Paula Scher, and I was commissioned to create the inside cover art for the new 45 rpm LP gate-fold album that was to be released by IMPEX Records.

IDEATION

I created five different directions that both exemplified the context behind the album as well as the graphic elements and colors that were shown on the cover art. It was very important to the client to have visuals centered around three guitars, which were symbolic for the guitar trio that recorded this album. I proceeded to digitalize the top three directions that were chosen by the client, and from these three, the favorites were directions one and two.

RESULT

The final piece was a combination of concepts one and two, which merged the San Francisco skyline, the Golden Gate Bridge, and three guitars. This semi-abstract artwork flowed with the elements that were on the original cover and depicted the vibrancy of the music from the album.
